The secret lives of Baba Segi’s wives is a very believable tale by Lola Shoneyin in a tone dripping heavily with dark humour and sarcasm.
Good characters, better plot, the language and writing clear and concise. Tone and mood somewhat low though. The plot is masterfully woven to illustrate the bleak yet interesting life of the four women living with Baba Segi, Baba Segi himself and his driver Taju. She takes us on a personal journey through all the characters’s lives. Through their good points, their flaws, their misdeeds, and reasons for who they are. None of the characters were linear but real and round, flawed and endowed, each ultimately human in all ramifications. Everyone antagonised everyone else…
